What is Google SERP, learn how to use it to your advantage
When you type a query into the Google search box, you get a whole page of results. This is the SERP or Google search result page of Google. From this page you can click the link that seems most relevant to your search. The design of Google SERP changes slightly frequently as the search engine adds more features. However, the basic format has remained the same since the launch of Google in 1998.
Google SERP and natural results
Google has always kept a minimalist, text-based design for its SERP.When you type a query and click “Google Search”, you get a list of 10 to 12 natural search results. These natural or organic search results are displayed on a white background. They are known as natural because companies do not pay for this listing. Instead, Google uses its search algorithm (Google Panda) to decide to order the results. In theory, the most relevant results sit on top. The site name and page title are displayed as hyperlinks. Clicking on these links will take you to the site. A brief description of each site is below each title.
Google SERP and paid advertisement
One way Google generates large revenues is offering a paid space in its search page. These paid search results are not determined by natural significance, but by an advertiser that makes payment. Paid ads appear in a column right on the SERP, separated from the organic listings. Similarly, for many lucrative terms like “credit cards” from one to four ads appear on the natural listings. Google sets these advertising spaces from the rest by putting on a soft background with the word “ads” in the upper right corner.
Google SERP Changes
Depending on the search query, Google can display additional information on the SERP. For example, search for “restaurants in New York” can display a list of restaurants marked on Google Places, along with a map to show where they are located. Similarly, searching for “New York” can show several pictures in small squares at the top of the SERP, and a small image linking to Google Maps.
Google SERP, options
Google offers options to customize your own Google SERP. For example, text links on the left sidebar offer the possibility to show only results for a certain period of time, such as the last 24 hours. Links in the sidebar and on top of the page allow you to change just to images, videos, translator, or academic books. Other options are hidden from the dropdown “More” menu. To keep you from seeing any image or inappropriate content, Google provides filtered results for “SafeSearch” by default. A link to the right of the search bar allows you to disable this feature if necessary.
