Magellan GPS Car Kit Review
- Built-in GPS receiver
- In-cradle charging
- Accommodates many cases & skins
- No iPhone 5 support
The Magellan GPS Car Kit works with your iPhone or iPod Touch by improving its GPS receiver via a receiver built into the cradle. It is also a hands-free Wireless bluetooth speakerphone and offers in-cradle charging to your device. The dock connector, however, doesn’t support the new Apple iPhone 5.
This GPS Car Kit supports the iPhone (3GS/4/4S) and the iPod Touch (3rd/4th generations). The dock connector signifies that the iPhone 5 is out of the question since it utilizes the brand new, a lot thinner Lightning plug.
The dimensions of the cradle measure 6.1 x 5.8 x 2.8-inches (wdh) and weighs in at 0.8-pounds. This hooks up into a suction cup mount that attaches to the car windows. The top of the cradle comes with an adjustable slide to maintain your iPhone or iPod Touch in place. This cradle is designed to support cases on your device, so you don’t need to remove it before mounting inside the cradle. Within our testing, we discovered that all but one of our test cases worked well inside the cradle. Mostly any case that’s not too bulky will easily fit in without much of a problem.
To charge your device, Magellan incorporates a cigarette lighter adapter that connects to the cradle’s side. When in the cradle, power is supplied for your iPhone/iPod Touch and it’ll charge. The Bluetooth hands-free speaker system additionally works via the dock connector (iPhone only). When a call comes in, the speaker activates and has a noise-canceling speakerphone. We found the quality of the speakerphone to be pretty good.
The interior GPS receiver built-into the cradle works with the dock connector to boost the GPS signal strength of your iPhone. It is a unique feature for iPhone car cradles
