Intel plans to release the Xeon “Ivytown” processor with 15 cores

Although 15 is not a common issue when we talk about the number of processor cores, this was the number chosen for its upcoming Intel XeonIvytown” processors aimed at high-performance servers. According to information provided, the processor will be based on the Haswell predecessor architecture, ie , Ivy Bridge, and will be called “Xeon E7 Ivytown” . In fact, Intel has confirmed that it will launch a 15 -core processor based on the Ivy Bridge architecture, so this would be a strong candidate.

As Computerworld reports, this chip has 15 cores and is intended for high performance servers, and is probably aimed at servers with four to eight sockets per board (which means we could be talking about  8 core processors of 15 cores in each one, nothing more and nothing less than a total of 120 physical cores). So far, Intel had peaked in with 12 physical cores (and a 24 threads process ) with its Xeon E5 V2, so we’re talking about a new record of cores per chip for Intel.


Adding more cores to a processor is a way to increase power while maintaining energy efficiency, and in fact we have the example of AMD whose strategy in high-end in recent times has been just add more cores to their processors instead of increasing the frequency of them, since that would raise consumption.

In fact, we must mention that these 15 core Xeon get Intel closer to AMD, since the latter already have 16 physical cores processors with the latest AMD Opteron 6300 series that has been out for a while. The worlds first 16-core from AMD dubbed “Interlagos” in 2011 and so far it is the king right now. It is expected that AMD, in fact, this year or next release new server for processors with 16 cores.f

Turning to Intel, the Ivytown processors are already being manufactured with a manufacturing process in 22 nanometers, although the company has not yet set a specific release date yet. They will be part of the Xeon E7 V2 product line, named Ivy Bridge-EX.
