GTX 670 SLI vs GTX 690 who will win. The GeForce GTX 670 was converted after its launch in to the second monoGPU card based in architecture Kepler from Nvidia. Basically it is a GTX 680 with less power, since both use the same graphics core GK 104 in it. Today we are going to show a performance comparison between a SLI GeForce GTX 670 configuration and a GTX 690 , the latter is the double GPU solution from Nvidia equipped with two GK 104 cores.
First of all we need to comment that the GeForce GTX 670 has the SMX unit disabled vs the GTX 680, this results in the number of CUDA cores and TMUs to be reduced to 1344 and 112, respectively, compared with 1536 CUDA Cores and 128 TMUs in the GTX 680.
Another aspect to consider is that the core speed is also lower in this case and runs at 915MHz base speed and 980Mhz with the use of technology from GPU Boost. For its part, the GTX 680 runs at 1006Mhz and 1058Mhz. Both have 2GB of GDDR5 memory running at a speed of 6.008Mhz effective and a 256bit interface.
As mentioned earlier, the GTX 670 is basically a “capped” version of the GTX 680 to continue to offer good performance but with a lower price. Currently, the GTX 670 can be found for about $400, while a GTX 680 raises its price to $500 or more approximately, in both cases with models based on the reference.
Moreover, the GTX 690 is the beast of Nvidia, inside are two cores that are running on a 104 GK with internal SLI. All this gives out 3072 CUDA cores, 4GB of GDDR5 memory interface of 512Bits. Its operating speeds are at 915MHz / 1.019Mhz to the core and 6008Mhz for memory. Its effective price makes it a little hard to get for most, for round it costs about $1,000 and that’s a lot of money.
Taking all this data on the table there is a question that is fairly clear. Is it better a SLI of GTX 670 or a single GTX 690?.. Price of course yes, because we could have two GTX 670 for less than $800, but let’s see the performance of a SLI GTX 670 against the 690. Let’s take on the analysis done by our fellows at Hexus and see the graphics performance of both options in some of the most important games of the year, all of course set to maximum.
In the first test with the game Alien VS Predator there are very results for both the SLI of GTX 670 and the GTX 690. The biggest difference is found in the resolution of 5.760 x 1080 pixels. Also observe the increased performance over a single GTX 670, especially in FullHD resolution.
In the game Batman: Arkham City the result is repeated, this time with more difference in FullHD resolution, where the GTX 690 takes a slight lead. In other resolutions the result is similar.
Battlefield 3 the results are very even for both graphics settings, little by little we are seeing no need to spend almost $1,000 for the costs of the GTX 690.
In Crysis 2 it repeats the same, very much similar between the SLI GTX 670 and GTX 690.
Let’s see some data in terms of consumption, temperature and sound. As you can see the consumption of a GTX 670 in SLI load is higher than a GTX 690, a normal thing since we need to supply two complete PCB’s instead of one. Standby consumption is very similar in both options.
Another small drawback is that the two cards installed means the temperature is a little hotter, but not much difference, both at load and at idle.
Sound both configurations are almost at par, so this factor is not decisive in choosing between one configuration or another.
After verifying the performance of both graphic cards, SLI GTX 670 is positioned as a better option, performance is almost equal to a GTX 690 and above all is cheaper. There is also the issue that we can purchase a single GTX 670 for about $370, and if you need more power get another one and put it in SLI.
