During the last Computex 2012 conference we have seen many interesting things from various motherboards, one of them was the new line of Asus motherboards for AMD and its socket AM3 + . The models shown are based on current 990FX chipset and just as interesting, will use technology to support Thunderbolt .
Asus few days ago had a device to provide the connection between Thunderbolt in some motherboards with Intel LGA 1155 socket, the device in question is called Thunderbolt/EX and is basically a PCI-E card that connects to an internal port on the motherboard and a DisplayPort connection.
But the interesting thing is that Asus will also use the same device for AMD motherboards with AM3 + socket. In particular the internal connection of Thunderbolt that has been seen on models, Crosshair V Formula-Z (990FX + SB950), M5A99FX PRO R2.0 (990FX + SB950), Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 (990FX + SB950) and M5A99X EVO R2.0 (990X + SB950).
As you can see the internal connection is identified as TB_HEADER , by which you can connect the Asus device to have a Thunderbolt connection on a motherboard designed for AMD processors.
We hope the other manufacturers that have motherboards with socket AM3 + do something like the Asus, so the Thunderbolt connection is not so limited since only a few models of motherboards support it.
